The New York Chantry
"Here we may reign secure; and in my choice
To reign is worth ambition, though in hell:
Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven."
- John Milton, Paradise Lost
Situated within the halls and vaults of Grace Church, at the intersection of Broadway and East 10th Street, the New York Chantry is a strange mixture of the public and the private. The church is open to mortal parishioners, yet barred to ghouls and Kindred of other Clans by Tremere sorcery. A single sub-wing along the building's south flank, comprising a small chapel and several luxurious underground chambers, is the only part of the Chantry that is accessible to non-Tremere Kindred, although few such visitors are willing to chance the dubious offer of Tremere hospitality.
Constructed in the mid-1800s, Grace Church exemplifies the delicate artistry of Gothic architecture. High windows and vaulted ceilings make its halls seem larger and more open than otherwise, and allow for a great deal of natural light. Designated as a major New York landmark, the church is currently under renovation, with much of the crumbling marble and stained glass being repaired and restored. Other, more sinister modifications may be taking place in the deeper reaches of the Chantry.
As is traditional for all Tremere Chantries, Grace Church constitutes a Domain in its own right, independent of the authority of the Prince. The Tremere Regent has Right of Domain within its walls, and may take virtually any action there with impunity, subject only to whatever political ramifications might follow. Thus, for Kindred of other Clans, to enter the Chantry is to step into the dragon's jaws. For this reason, no matter how cordial the Regent may seem to be, it is a rare outsider who will choose to partake of Tremere hospitality.
